Embracing Apps: A Journey to Better Health

Dr. Levi Merritt DC, NBC-HWC, CPT

Introduction.

I’ve always been running to keep up with the ever-evolving digital landscape. Yet, despite my less-than-stellar tech skills, I’ve discovered that even someone like me can harness the power of health apps to manage health and well-being better (proving that you don’t need to be a tech wizard to benefit from the digital health revolution).

What is an app?

An app, short for "application," is a software program designed to perform specific tasks or functions on various devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smartwatches. Apps can range from simple tools, like calculators and calendars, to complex programs that handle tasks such as gaming, social networking, and productivity.

Mobile apps are designed for smartphones and tablets, available through app stores like Google Play and Apple App Store. We’ll include some specific examples later.

Why use a health app?

Using an app to monitor your health offers numerous benefits, from improved self-awareness and disease prevention to enhanced communication with healthcare providers.

Health monitoring apps can track a wide range of data, including heart rate, sleep patterns, physical activity, diet, and more. By analyzing this data, these apps provide personalized insights that can help you make informed decisions about your health.

Many health apps incorporate features such as goal setting, progress tracking, and social sharing. These features can increase your motivation to stay active and adhere to healthy habits, as well as hold you accountable for your health-related goals. Some apps feature communities or support networks where users can share their experiences, ask questions, and receive support from others with similar health goals or conditions.

They also provide a convenient way to keep track of your health data all in one place. You can easily access your health information anytime and anywhere, making it simpler to maintain a consistent monitoring routine.

For individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma, health apps can assist in managing these conditions more effectively. Apps can track medication schedules, monitor symptoms, and provide reminders for medical appointments or tests.

Many health apps can sync with other health devices like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and blood pressure monitors, creating a comprehensive and integrated health monitoring system. Regular monitoring of health metrics can lead to early detection of potential health issues. This early warning system can prompt you to seek medical advice sooner, potentially preventing more serious health problems down the line.

Manage your diet and lose weight.

Mobile apps can be powerful tools for managing your diet and losing weight, offering a variety of features that make tracking, planning, and maintaining healthy eating habits easier and more effective.

Apps like MyFitnessPal and Lose It! allow you to log your food intake and track your daily calorie consumption. By inputting the foods you eat, you can monitor your calorie intake to ensure it aligns with your weight loss goals. Many of the apps have a barcode scanning feature that allows you to quickly input the nutritional information of packaged foods by scanning their barcodes. This saves time and ensures accurate tracking.

These apps often also provide detailed nutritional information about the foods you consume, including macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals). This helps you make informed choices to ensure a balanced diet.

Weight loss apps often include progress tracking features where you can log your weight, measurements, and other health metrics over time. Visual progress charts and graphs can motivate you by showing your achievements.

Apps like Mealtime and Yummly offer meal planning features that help you create weekly meal plans. They provide recipes, grocery lists, and portion sizes, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan.

Apps like Noom and SparkPeople include community features where you can connect with others who have similar goals. Sharing experiences, challenges, and successes can provide support and motivation. Noom uses psychological and behavioral science techniques to help you build healthier habits. They offer coaching, cognitive behavioral strategies, and motivational tips to encourage lasting lifestyle changes.

Many diet apps integrate with other health and fitness apps and devices, such as fitness trackers (Fitbit, Apple Watch) and health apps (Apple Health, Google Fit).

Diet apps can be tailored to accommodate various dietary preferences and restrictions, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or specific diet plans like keto or paleo. Apps can send reminders to log meals, drink water, or follow your meal plan. These reminders help keep you on track and prevent you from forgetting important steps in your diet regimen.

Get fit.

Exercise apps can be incredibly beneficial for helping you get fit.

Many apps offer structured workout plans tailored to different fitness levels, goals, and preferences. They provide step-by-step instructions, demonstration videos, and progress tracking to keep you motivated and on track. Some apps use algorithms or user input to personalize workout plans based on your fitness level, goals, and preferences. This customization ensures that the exercises are suitable and challenging for you.

Like the dieting apps, many fitness apps include features such as goal setting, progress tracking, and reminders to keep you motivated and accountable. Some apps also incorporate social features where you can share your progress, compete with friends, or join communities for additional support.

Exercise apps often track your workout metrics such as time, distance, calories burned, and even heart rate if connected to a wearable device. This data helps you monitor your progress over time and make adjustments to your fitness routine as needed.

Exercise apps provide convenience by allowing you to access a variety of workouts wherever you are. This flexibility means you can exercise at home, at the gym, or even outdoors, following structured routines designed by fitness professionals. From cardio to strength training, yoga to HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), exercise apps offer a wide range of workout types. This variety helps prevent boredom and allows you to target different muscle groups and fitness components.

Improve sleep.

Apps can play a significant role in helping you improve your sleep.

Many apps can monitor your sleep patterns by tracking your movement and/or using your smartphone's sensors to detect your sleep stages. This data provides insights into your sleep quality, duration, and any disruptions throughout the night. If you use wearable devices like smartwatches or fitness trackers, some sleep apps can integrate with these devices to provide more accurate sleep tracking data and insights.

Many sleep apps provide educational resources on sleep hygiene, the importance of sleep, and tips for improving sleep quality. This knowledge can empower you to make informed decisions about your sleep habits.

Apps can help you establish a regular sleep schedule by setting reminders for bedtime and wake-up times. Consistency in sleep timing can regulate your body's internal clock, improving the overall quality of your sleep. Apps may provide tips for creating a sleep-friendly environment, such as adjusting room temperature, minimizing noise, and ensuring your mattress and pillows are comfortable.

Some apps offer guided relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or soothing sounds that can help you unwind before bedtime. These techniques can reduce stress and anxiety, which are common barriers to good sleep.

Apps can remind you to reduce screen time before bed, as exposure to blue light from screens (phones, tablets, computers) can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Apps can wake you up during a lighter sleep stage, which can leave you feeling more refreshed and less groggy compared to waking up during a deep sleep stage.

Some apps allow you to keep a sleep diary where you can log factors like caffeine intake, exercise, and stress levels to identify patterns that may affect your sleep. Journaling can also help clear your mind before bedtime.
